Day 19 Pick: Wimbledon, Tsonga +220

After my breakdown of both Wimbledon matches, I really just needed to decide whether I wanted to bet big to get back a little or bet a little to get back a lot.

I choose to go with the latter.

I look forward to seeing that Tsonga dance following a big upset.

Wimbledon 2011: Predicting the Winners of the Men’s Final Four

Only four remain in the Men’s bracket at Wimbledon with Roger Federer as the lone top-seed to stumble along the way.  Upsets are bound to occur in almost all the Grand Slam Tournaments, but this year’s Wimbledon was pretty tame on the men’s side (the women’s draw, on the other hand was a completely different story).

While Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s comeback against Federer was truly impressive, a 12-seed beating a 2-seed isn’t exactly ground rattling in the world of upsets.  Tsonga snapped Federer’s previously perfect record after winning the first set in a Wimbledon match, marking a small yet significant change in the tide at the All England Club.

The three other top-seeds reached the semifinals relatively unscathed with their toughest opponents in this tournament still lurking ahead.

The excitement levels for these matches are incredibly high even with the absence of Federer.  In fact, while most people I know salivate over Federer’s career, I am one of the few that is more-than-ready for him to call it a day.  However, after reading Brian Phillip’s article on Grantland, I can’t stop picturing fangs protruding from Federer’s mouth, which raises a fear that because of Federer’s lust for blood, he could be playing forever!

If that’s the case, then let’s just enjoy this year’s final four without him.

JD's Docket: Agency Final ~ Tonight

My second final in law school is slated for tonight.  I'm not as stressed as I was for the Personal Property Final, probably because this class was nothing but "take home exams" that covered the Agency topic.  There were not a ton of rules to learn and the use of our outlines during the final is also a little soothing.

After studying for most of this morning, I wanted to take a break.  However, my break involved coming up with a way of putting all of this Agency stuff in my brain to some sort of a post.  What I came up with is a story with pictures and then the legal result from what I think I have learned.

This post should really be called "Shit I Think I Know About the Law Because Ive Taken a Few Law School Classes."  But, it sounded a little clunky:

Ok, here are my facts:

Day 18 Pick: Wimbledon, Sharapova -290

Mardy Fish floundered (stayed up until 2 coming up with that one) against No. 1 ranked Rafael Nadal.  It was an expected loss for me, but that did stop me from yelling at Fish through the television yesterday morning.

Back to the ladies bracket today and why not go back to the blonde that stopped my streak last time.  Ok, it’s not the same blonde from two picks ago, but Lisicki IS in this game.  John McEnroe touted that Sharapova would be in the Championship game and he could be right.

Lisicki has had problems with long matches in the past, most notably when she was taken off on a stretcher a few years ago when her body pretty much shut down.  Sharapova possesses superior accuracy on this grass and should have Lisicki moving all over the court.

I have to risk a lot here for a decent reward, which always sucks.  Let’s hope Sharapova can live up to her favorite status.

Captain's Chronicles: Wasting Time in Fantasy Land

My wife came up to me a couple nights ago with a precarious grin on her face and the television remote firmly in her hand. She bashfully informed me that she has a crush on Adam Levine and proceeded to sort of giggle like a maturing school girl thumbing through a Tiger Beat.

For those people part of the unhip brethren which I proudly hold a membership card, Adam Levine is the lead singer of Maroon 5 and a current "coach" on NBC's The Voice.  I'm secure enough in my masculinity to admit that he is a decent looking fellow.

While it is always a little unnerving when you hear your significant other say they find someone else attractive, it would be ludicrous to think that I don’t partake in fantasy worlds of my own.  In fact, as Wendy's drool short-circuited the remote during every one of Levine's scenes, I was fixated to my laptop screen googling my upcoming match-ups in fantasy baseball.

Day 17 Pick: Wimbledon, Fish +400 ~ Pregame

Lisicki finally put an end to my Wimbledon losing streak, coming out firing against Bartoli and hanging on to continue the string of stinging upsets in the Ladies bracket.

With the top four men making it to the quarterfinals, it almost seems like the Top Four have a legitimate chance of making the Final Four.

Vegas is definitely leaning towards that direction, making it difficult for the gambler to make an "easy $100". Although the men's side hasn't seen a great deal of upsets, Andy Murrary is still in the draw.

Instead of going for the obvious upset, lets get a little bit ballsier. Mardy Fish is the last American in the draw and to pull a line from Princess Leia, he is our only hope.

It's going to be extremely tough for him to topple Nadal, but nothing is ever really that impossible at Wimbledon.

JD’s Docket: Law School?...Are You Crazy?

"Why did you decide to go to law school?" is probably the most asked question that I hear nowadays.  That, closely followed by "what kind of law do you want to practice?”

Since starting Lincoln Law School in February, everyone wants to know why in the hell I want to go back to school.  To be honest, my response usually involves a shrug, quickly followed by a half-assed answer that probably doesn't reveal the entire truth.

Law school was always a goal of mine, even in grade school. Many law students will mark the reading of To Kill a Mockingbird as the time when becoming a lawyer rose to the forefront of their career aspirations. Reading that story in eighth grade surely added logs to the legal fire burning in me, but I remember my first mock trial a year early in a world history class that initially set off the spark for me.

Day 16 Pick: Wimbledon, Lisicki -125 ~ Pre-game

The week of Wimbledon started off a bit rocky, but Luck be a lady tomorrow morning.

For the first time in this 365 Day Betting Project, this sports junkie jumps over the “crack line” for most sports gamblers…betting on women sports.  Since the men’s and women’s matchups are scheduled on alternate days in the second week, I was forced to turn my attention to the Ladies draw in search of a Wimbledon Winner.

After seeing that every player in my short bank of women’s tennis names were already ousts, I honestly just went with a matchup that Vegas was not leaning heavily one way or the other.

At -125, it appears that it will be a pretty even match against Bartoli, but I trust in my boy Patty Mac. Lisicki's serve was being praised by Pat McEnroe as ESPN’s coverage came to a close and that really stuck with me.

Let's hope this pick is sticky enough to grab onto a win.

Day 15 Pick: Wimbledon, Kubot +220 ~ Post-game

The first thing I do every morning is check my phone. It's probably because I think I'm more important than I really am, but my regular mixture of useless emails quickly proves otherwise.

This morning (and any morning that I bet on Wimbledon) my fingers effortlessly found a Wimbledon scoreboard with minimal brain activity.

As my eye finally focused on the score, my brain glanced at the numbers and sent Kubot the "Jason Jinx" quicker than Mongolian BBQ goes through me. Which is pretty fast.

Kobut was up two sets and had match point in a third game tie breaker. Reading this set line, I was a little upset that the game was practically over because I wanted to watch some of it. But with my recent betting trend, I figured beggers can't be choosers.

It was that one second of wanting this game to last just a bit longer that essentially fucked Kobut.

The minute I turned on the game Kubot seemed to be fighting to stay alive. It ended up being a great five set match. However, this guy got "royally" screwed once again.

I guess that's what I get for betting on a Polak. (It's ok I can say that, I'm 1/10 Polish. Or can I say that? Hmm shit. It's already been said.)

Day 15 Pick: Wimbledon, Kubot +220 ~ Pregame

Tampa Bay outlasted Houston 14-10 on Sunday, but picking up Neimann on my fantasy team ended up costing me a category.

Nonetheless, thanks to the Rays for ending my three-game slide.

Although Wimbledon ended up costing me last week, there is something about the "All England Club" that will always grab my attention.

This week, I will feature only Wimbledon picks for this #365daybettingproject. The final week of the fortnight tournament is where it really starts to get exciting and I hope to make a few dollars on the way.

The Kubot vs.Lopez matchup oozed with potential for me today. Both players are coming off enormous upsets (Kubot beating Monflis in four sets and Lopez silencing Roddick in straight sets) and the winner of this matchup will definitely need some underdog magic in the next round.

For some reason, Kubot's win against Monflis was a bit more impressive. Roddick always seems like he is doomed at Wimbledon and he was bound to get upset sooner or later.

Kubot's performance in the earlier rounds were slightly better than Lopez, giving him a minuscule edge in my mind.

Vegas sees it playing out the other way, but we all know just because he is a favorite on the board doesn't necessarily mean he is on the court.

Let's hope it pans out in my favor

Day 13 Pick: Mariners, Vargas -130 ~ Pregame

After looking at the steady decline in numbers for both Verlander and Liriano the past 30 days, I decided to stay away from those two bets today.

Instead, I went with a pitcher that I picked for a spot start on my league leading fantasy team "I Wanna Dip My Balls in It". Jason Vargas not only has an awesome first name, but he threw a CG against the Phillies in his last start. Not too shabby. His few starts before that were also impressive and I expect him to continue the streak against the turbulent Marlins.

If he can pull out another stellar performance for me today it would be huge for both my pick em and my fantasy team.

This losing streak needs to stop and hopefully Jason is my man to do it.

Day 12 Pick: Astros, Rodriguez +120 ~ Postgame

Ya, that whole "go the other way" idea was probably not a wise choice.

Shields was lights out, going nine innings and averaging a strike out per. Four of Rodriguez's five earned runs came in the third and the Astros would never recover.

A two game, six unit slide definitely burns.

But, there are some good matchups waiting tomorrow. I know a win is hiding somewhere in that pile.

Liarno against Milwaukee and Verlander versus the Diamondbacks seem tempting at first glance.

Will have to look into both a little more.

Day 12 Pick: Astros, Rodriguez +120 ~ Pre-game

Wimbledon ended up getting the best of me despite a .500 record.  When all was said in done, I ended up losing $150 on those two picks.  I probably should have stayed away from the Isner wager, especially since I thought it was a little suspect that he was the favorite.

Almagro had a ton of power for a small guy.  The Spaniard did not surrender a game on his serve, blowing serve after sever past Isner.  Since I don’t know a lot about every player in tennis, I tend to get burned like this a lot.  This is why we are heading back to the diamond for today’s pick.

I decided to try something a little different today.  Instead of going with a pitcher that has been doing well lately, I’m going to go against it.   I know, it sounds pretty retarded.

Usually when I check ESPN’s PR 7/15/30, I go with a pitcher that has been trending upward from the PR15 to the PR7. Today, I looked for a pitcher that has been trending upward from the PR30 to the PR15 to the PR7 and went the other way.  Absolutely genius, right?

Here is my dumb-ass reasoning.

A pitcher can’t be perfect forever and he is due to have a game where he gets jostled.  I wanted to try and capitalize on this.  Rather than go with the favorite, why not try to find a pick that pays out more than even money.  We will see if this actually works.

Over the past 30 days, Tampa Bay’s James Shield has continued to put up great numbers, going from 2.88 (PR30) to 7.13(PR7).  We can only hope that he slips up today against the Astros’ Wandy Rodriguez.

Lucky for me, Rodriguez has also been doing pretty well these past few weeks.  This is probably why he isn’t a bigger underdog.

It’s a bit of a risk but I need to try and win back those units that went down the drain with Isner.

Day 11 Pick: Wimbledon, Isner -225 ~ Pregame

Despite my usual bad luck with tennis betting, it proved to be a fruitful wager yesterday.

Ljubicic dominated his match against Stakhovsky, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-4,6-2).

Since I actually managed to win a tennis bet, I figured why not take another stab at it again today. John Isner made himself famous last year, playing in the longest Wimbledon match ever (it took almost 12 hours to complete and spanned over three days).

For those that have not seen him in action, Isner is a tall drink a water that can absolutely smoke the ball across the net. He struggled a bit coming into Wimbledon, but he has showed signs of potential after the first few rounds.

His opponent, Nicolas Almagro, is actually ranked 16th in this tournament, making the -225 in Isner's favor a little bit suspect.

This line was probably written for the American gambler, like myself, and it seemed to worked.

Let's hope that Isner can pull off the rankings upset and prove those Vegas oddsmakers correct. Otherwise, it's probably back to baseball.

Day 10 Pick: Wimbledon, Ljubicic -200 ~ Pregame

In honor of my grandpa, who loves the sport of tennis and is the main reason my mom and I love the sport as well,  I've decided to go with a Wimbledon match for today's pick.

Ivan Ljubicic surprised many people in the first round, defeating Marin Cilic who was ranked 27th in this event.  Today, he squares off against Sergiy Stakhovksy, a straight set winner against Daniel Cox in the first round.

I dont tend to gamble on tennis and when I do it doesn't seem to work out for me.  But, today could be different.

I really dont know much about either these players, but this early in the tournament, all of the odds on the players that I do know are astronomic (like bet $1200 to win $100).  Hopefully, I chose wisely today.

Captain's Chronicles: When Life is Truly on the Line

My Grandpa with my Niece
Anybody that follows sports has heard an announcer blurt out the phrase that "a team's life is on the line." This usually refers to the dwindling chances that this team has of continuing their season. With their backs to the wall, these teams either surrender to their inevitable fates or fight until there is nothing else to fight for.

In the real world, fighting for one's life is really not that different.

A few months ago, my 90 year old grandfather brushed shoulder with the man in the black robe but managed to juke his way around the sickle carrying bastard.

With new life bestowed upon him, my grandpa lived to play another day and made sure he enjoyed everything that he loved...from devouring great food to munching on foes at the local poker room.

This past Saturday, however, an unexpected stroke put my grandpa's life back on the line.

As a sports junkie, I have this uncontrollable urge to compare everything to the games that I love. If you had to compare life to a sport, it would probably be baseball.

Like baseball, life is a very long road. While the season brings it's  ups and downs, there always seems like there is time to make a final push to reach that coveted crown. Things tend to get harder once you reach the playoffs and the same goes with the twilight of your life. The stakes are raised and your life is truly on the line.

Despite the initial stroke on Saturday, my grandpa found a way to fight back and get back into the game.  But just when we thought a comeback was in the making, fate pushed backed again.

A second stroke hammered my grandpa on Monday and I honestly thought that was the end. Game over. See ya next season (or the afterlife).

But, like those determined teams that are able to scratch their way out of a 0-3 hole in a best of seven series, my grandpa did not give up. He is a fighter and is proving it every time him and the Grim Reaper cross paths.

Despite his frustrations of not being able to talk, write, or really communicate in any normal way, my grandpa is not giving up.  While his fight is far from over, he has evened this final series and, guess what Death, he has home field advantage.

I love my grandpa to the Heavens, but I know that his season will come to a close soon. As most people know nothing beats a decisive game 7 and I'm sure this one will be an epic battle that I will never forget.

Please pray for my grandpa if you do that sort of thing. Because even though this might be a home game for him, he is still a bit of an underdog. However, like most teams that are forced to come from behind, he wouldn't have it any other way.

Day 9 Pick: Orioles, Guthrie -114 ~ Post-game

A difficult day was made harder to swallow with Guthrie's putrid performance.

Despite chasing McDonald after 4.2 innings, the Orioles couldn't do any better against the Pirates pen, managing only one hit.

Guthrie struggled to keep the Pirates off the base paths, allowing 11 hits and three walks. Guthrie's five earned runs were more than enough for the Pirates to snap my three-game winning streak.

To add even more shit to the crap pie that I've been eating the past few days, the Giants gave up eight runs in the first inning of tonight's game against the Twins. In case you dont follow baseball, Minnesota sucks balls this season. After the first time through the rotation, Bumgarner could only get the pitcher out. I guess he wanted his ERA to start matching his win-loss record. The Giants' ship is quickly gaining water and they could be in deep trouble if they can't find a way to bring in some runs.

However, tomorrow is another day, which means another chance to get back on the right side of the coin.

Day 9 Pick: Orioles, Guthrie -114 ~ Pregame

Weaver came through big for me yesterday, holding the Marlins to only one run.  The rest of the Angels decided to make it interesting though, only putting together two runs with the winning run coming in the eighth.

But a win is a win, so I cant necessary complain.

That's three wins a row for me and I'm back up to a .500 record.  Hooray!

Today, I'm going with Baltimore.  Guthrie has had a few solid outings and he is going up against the Pirates.   Other than that, this pick was just a product of ESPN's PR5 rating.

Let's hope that this pick can keep the winning ball rolling.

Captain's Chronicles: Steering Clear of the Poop...For Now

A captain in sports (and boating, flying, and really anything in society) is the leader of a particular group. But, if you are my buddy Jimmy, a captain is a loser that you probably don't want to associate yourself with (ie Captian “Save a Ho”, Captain Obvious, Captain Dipshit etc.). I'd like to think of myself as somewhere in between.

As the lead and only writer of this blog, I naturally dubbed myself the captain. I know..pretty dorky, lame, stupid…all of the above.

In order to make sure that this blog doesn't just revolve around my 365 Day Betting Project, I wanted to create a recurring entry where I can post uninteresting hogwash that is going on in my world.

Although my wife will never openly admit it, she is a bit of a Star Trek nerd and this rubbed off on me a little with the recent movie. Anyone that knows of Star Trek has heard William Shatner utter the words "Captain's Log, star date, blah blah" and then go on about what he learned from the episode that you just watched.

I wanted the title of this recurring blog to play off of that somehow and eventually landed on "Captain's Chronicle". Originally, I wanted to make a poop joke that played on the word log, but decided against it. But don't get me wrong, there will always be room for poop jokes in this blog and in my life. That’s just one of the many joys of never growing up.

Earlier today Wendy posted my first article of this blog on her Facebook.  And, of course, I received a smart ass comment from a friend.  This comes with the territory of being a self proclaimed jackass, you tend to surround yourself by people of like mind.

This leads me to think that perhaps calling myself Captain is opening up a wide array of avenues to be made fun of by these people that I tend to call “friends”. So, to whomever of my friends that do decide to read this crap that I call blog….BRING IT!

That’s all I have for now.  It’s time to sit through my second to last Agency class while I constantly check the LAA/FLA score on ESPN Gamecast.  Oh the joys of being in school during this electronic age.  Can’t imagine how much worse my grades would be at UCSB if they had wireless back then.

Day 8 Pick: Angles, Weaver -124 ~ Pregame

For anyone that knows me, I’ve had a fascination with the Weavers since college.  Starting with older brother Jeff, I just liked his rugged look and reckless appearance on the mound.  Jeff came into the Bigs highly touted and he didn’t disappoint his first few season.  Then, he began to disappoint on a daily basis.

As a UCSB Gaucho, I started following Jared Weaver during his career at Long Beach State.  Once he got drafted, my strange loyalty to this family of pitchers continued.

This season, Weaver came out of the gates blazing, but recently hit a horrendous skid.  He seems like he is turning it around and this next start against the turbulent Florida Marlins could be his for the taking.

The Marlins manager just quit and the team seems to spinning around in the abyss.  Weaver’s heavy fastball and wicked slider should do a number on Florida’s slumping hitters.

I’m enjoying this two-game winning streak that I am riding and hopefully I can get a little more love from Weaver tonight.

Although I’m still $421 in the hole, I’m only one win away from a .500 record, which, I guess, is somewhat respectable.

Day 7: Twins, Liriano -147 ~ Post-game

The Twins are officially my favorite team this month.

Two days in a row they pulled out wins for me in my daily pick'em and the fact that they were against the Padres makes the wins even sweeter.

Speaking of the Giants, they are fucking pissing me off. Find some hitting Sabaen, because there are only so many one run games we can watch slip away.

I know I felt this way around the same time last year, but we can't really expect the luck-lightning to strike again this season. Can we?

After a long Father's Day, that's pretty much all the energy I have to dedicate to this journal.

One game away from a .500 record. Gotta keep the streak going.

Day 6 Pick: Twins, Baker -140 ~ Postgame

Finally, a win to snap my four game losing streak!

Scott Baker locked it down for me tonight, fanning eight through the first four and 10 batters overall.  The Twins only mustered one run, yet that was enough against the problematic Padres.

Something that I failed to mention on Twitter and on this blog is that as well as making picks, I am also placing units on each bet. I can place any where between 1-5 units per pick, each unit representing $100.  I only put 2 units on this bet, and at -140, I didn't really make up a lot of ground in the Payout column.

Let's hope this new winning streak last and that I will never have to listen to a Britney song ever again.

Until we meet again tomorrow.

Day 6 Pick: Twins, Baker -140 ~ Pregame

There isn’t much to how I went about picking the Twins and Scott Baker.  As a sports addict, I am, of course, in a couple ESPN Fantasy Baseball leagues.

Thanks to the handy ESPN baseball app, it provides me with a player performance ranking number for the past 5, 15, or 30 days. When I checked pitchers with the best PR15, Baker ranked second behind Jordan Zimmerman .

I was going to go with Zimmerman, but as his owner on “I Want to Dip My Balls in It”, I had a feeling he was doomed just like the rest of my pitchers this week (I was wrong).  Plus, it was an early morning game and I didn’t want to start the day on the wrong foot if my losing streak continued. (Especially since the day was leading to chauffeuring girls to a Britney Spears concert… no, not teenagers, my wife and her friends)

So, instead, I went with Baker.

Baker squares (ha!) off against the Padres, which tends to scare me.  In fact, I usually tend to shy away from betting on or against teams in the same division as my favorites.  They always find a way to screw me.

The more I look at his numbers, the more I'm not really liking this pick.  Baker spun a gem last time out, going the distance with seven Ks.  However, some pitchers have problems after bringing home a CG.  Let's hope this isn't so for Baker

While he also got a win the start before that, it was against Cleveland and he gave up nine hits, making that stat line a little less soothing.

However, I like that the Twins have Mauer back.  I’m hoping he sparks their rancid offense against another offense that is struggling.  San Diego shouldn’t put up more than four runs, even if Baker is wild.  Hopefully, Minnesota will put up at least five.

Even though I said on my tweet early today that “I can practically feel the win”,  I think I’ve lost the feeling…

The Always-Awkward to Write ‘First Blog Post’

Sleeping off my Sports High in C-L-E-M-S-O-N
Why is it that first blog posts are always so awkward?  Is it because it kind of makes you feel like a lunatic to even think about starting a blog?

What’s the point of an independent blog, really? Are people going to read non-sense spewed by a random person or even a friend? I guess I will have to find out.

Although blogs are everywhere nowadays, they still carry this strange stigma.  If you walk into a sports bar and tell people about a sports blog that you are writing, you might find yourself hanging by your underwear in the bathroom.

Even if you tell your closest friends that you are writing a blog, it returns a “smell the fart” acting face that is just unnatural.

Lately, my wife Wendy and I have been bitten by the blogging bug (as well as other real bugs that seem to be constantly crawling around our house).

About two months ago, I started writing a blog on Pac-12 Football called The Pacific Dozen.

For the past three years, I wrote for Bleacher Report, covering the San Jose Sharks, San Francisco Giants, Stanford Cardinal, and eventually all of College Football. Earlier this year they offered me a paid opportunity, which would have been awesome if I hadn’t recently started law school.

I knew I would not be able to juggle the type of research required for the B/R assignments plus my homework.  Also, the paid opportunity only garnished $100 a week and I was doing close to 30-40 hours a work on their assignments.  It wasn’t worth it to me.

I didn’t want to stop writing all together, but I didn’t really want to write for B/R either.  So, I started The Pacific Dozen to strictly follow the Pac-12 and to mainly keep my head in the game.

Recently, Wendy also decided to start blogging.  Her blog, WendyB Photography, looks wonderful and everyone should check it out!  (Like right now…go…and then come back to read my gibberish).  She is really diving head first into this renewed passion and I love it.

But, back to me…

Because of The Pacific Dozen, I started using Facebook and Twitter a lot.  Like, way too much.  I kind feel like a teenage girl with the amount of time that I am tapping away on my iPhone.

I wanted to start using Twitter for more than just posting articles.   So, the gambler in me quickly shouted out “Why don’t you do a daily gambling tweet!” … and I was immediately sold.

I started this 365 day project on Monday and currently I am posting a horrendous 1-4 record.    Last night, I began to think that I wanted to do more with this project.  Maybe start a …. you guessed it, a blog.

But, I didn’t want a blog that just the diehard sports fan would read.  I wanted something that my wife might occasionally take a glance at.  Wendy isn’t exactly the biggest sports fan and I don’t blame her for not readingThe Pacific Dozen.  If you dont follow Pac-12 Football, then the entire blog will go over your head.

However, sports will always be running rampantly through my head, so it is hard for me to make a blog site that doesn’t touch (and completely molest) the subject.

“The Journal of a Sports Junkie” (as you probably can see from that last line) will not be for the faint of heart.  I love the F-word and I’m surprised that 1) it took me so fucking long to say it and 2) that I censored myself on the first one.

On this blog, I will provide unedited commentary on why I picked the games for my #365freesportspick non-sense on twitter, what I think about after the games' results, why the Giants or any other Bay Area sports team is pissing me off, and really whatever else that I want to talk about in the world around us, which means Ill bring up some areas of Law that I'm learning at that specific point in time.

Thanks for getting through this always-awkward first post with me.  Now, on with the ridiculousness!
